What Kind of "Braces" Will Your Child Have?

Custom-made appliances or ‘braces” are chosen according to the problem being treated. They may be “removable” of “fixed” (cemented). They may be made of metal, plastic, ceramic or combinations of these materials. All appliances have one aim – to use gentle pressure to move teeth into their proper positions. Under this pressure, the body builds up new supporting tissue to maintain the improved position of the teeth. Years of specialized training and experience give the orthodontist the skill to handle tooth movement properly.

A correctly fitted appliance, carefully cemented into place, does not harm the teeth in any way. Before orthodontic treatment starts, all cavities should be filled. During orthodontic treatment, the patient must brush and floss his/her teeth regularly and avoid sticky candy, gum or hard foods.

First visits (when appliances are put on) may take several long appointments which require time off from school. (Schools will cooperate with this procedure.) Some appointments may be scheduled after school, while other appointments take more time will be scheduled during school hours. Since most patients are of school age, the appointment times will be rotated to treat everyone fairly.
