Can You Tell if Your Child Needs Treatment?

In general, crowded, unevenly spaced, protruding or rotated teeth, and occasionally, mouth breathing or bleeding gums are signs that help is needed.

Orthodontics is needed if a child’s teeth do not fit together properly when the mouth is closed, or if any of the following are present:

  • Lower teeth bite outside the upper teeth
  • Front teeth do not meet when back teeth meet
  • Teeth do not chew properly
  • Lips don’t come together normally
  • The mouth is usually open
  • The child breathes trough the mouth

If your child is self conscious about having a prominent tooth or having too much space between the front teeth, corrective treatment should also be considered.

In every case, your orthodontist’s opinion should guide you in your decision to undertake orthodontic care.

Orthodontic treatment is in no way a substitute for general dental care. Regular visits to your dentist are encouraged and remain as important as ever.
